Rooflight or “Velux” Conversion
The Velux conversion is the darling of planners, minimalists, and anyone who doesn’t fancy scaffolding taking over their life. It doesn’t involve dormers, extensions, or anything that might frighten the neighbours. Instead, it simply means adding rooflights to your loft — windows in the sky, if you like.
If your house sits inside a conservation area (which is planner-speak for “you shall not alter a brick without permission”), then a Velux rooflight conversion may be your only option. The good news? There’s no limit to how many rooflights you can install. So you can go full observatory if you like.
The Velux brand offers rooflights in every shape and size imaginable — top-hinged, centre-pivoted, even ones that open like a sun-trap terrace.
Dormer Loft Conversion
Now we’re talking. The dormer loft conversion is for those who want more than just light and air — they want actual space. Real, honest-to-goodness room to stretch, breathe, and possibly swing a cat. (Not that we recommend that sort of thing).
A dormer adds a box-like structure to your roof. This box can have a pitched roof, a gabled end, or — brace yourself — a flat roof. Yes, flat. And no, it won’t leak. Ours have a slight slope and a bespoke three-layer covering so watertight you could hold a tea party on top.
Dormer conversions are ideal if your home has a hipped roof, or if you’re turning the loft into a master suite complete with en-suite and dressing area. Basically, if you want to stand up without ducking, you’ll need one.
Where possible, we’ll even tile-hang the dormer so it blends in with the existing roof. Neighbours will be none the wiser unless they look up or visit.
En-Suite Conversions
If your loft is destined to be a bedroom, you may as well go the whole hog and add an en-suite. A proper one. We recommend a shower over a full-sized bath to save space and still leave room for a towel rail, a mirror, and your existential musings.
In most lofts, there’s more than enough room for a compact en-suite. And yes, we’ve seen the awkward spaces. That’s what clever design is for.
Mansard Loft Conversion
The Mansard is something of a local celebrity in London — loved by planners, architects, and people who want to squeeze every last usable inch from their loft.
It’s usually built at the back of the house and involves a sloped dormer at around 70 degrees. It sounds steep because it is. But it also means maximum headroom, lots of windows, and a look that won’t upset the character of your street. We even match the bricks, when possible. You’re welcome.
Hip to Gable Loft Conversion
This one’s not for the faint-hearted. A hip to gable conversion involves rebuilding one side of your roof to match the ridge line — like persuading your house to straighten up and stand tall.
It’s perfect if your current roof slopes inwards, robbing you of space and dignity. We’ll fill in that hip, add a new gable wall, and top it off with your choice of finish — rendered, tiled, or bricked to match your home.
Due to the structural changes involved, this type of conversion usually needs planning permission. But don’t worry — we’re used to red tape. We cut through it like butter.
Whichever loft conversion you choose, rest assured we’ve built them all before. Many times. For many delighted homeowners across London. Some even invited us back for tea.
Creating Your Own Loft Conversion
A loft conversion doesn’t just give you space. It gives you breathing room — literally and financially. It’s one of the few home improvements that actually makes sense whether you’re planning to stay forever or sell up next year.
Better still, the process can be fun. Really.
But here’s the catch: most people don’t know which type of loft conversion they need. That’s where our team of loft experts comes in. We’ll visit, measure, nod thoughtfully, and help you figure out exactly what works for your home and your budget.
Have a look at our Loft Gallery for inspiration, and don’t hesitate to contact us. We’ll talk you through the options — jargon-free, promise — and help you turn your loft from a forgotten attic to your favourite room in the house.
